MS Oakes was engaged to enhance the existing building by refurbishing the toilets, creating a breakout room, and improving accessibility through the installation of an external lift and modified pathways with wheelchair ramps.
The original toilets and vanity units were stripped out, and the layout was reconfigured to accommodate new sanitaryware and cubicles, releasing space for the build of a new breakout room and providing a more modern and functional space.
The breakout room was constructed, featuring a fire-rated glazed screen to allow clear visibility from the adjacent classroom while maintaining safety standards.
To improve accessibility, an external lift was installed with direct access to the existing stairwell. The project involved constructing a durable lift base and modifying external pathways with ramps to meet wheelchair accessibility requirements. The lift with a self-finished shaft, supplied and installed by a client-specified specialist contractor, was contracted through MS Oakes.
Given the project’s location within a school, MS Oakes adhered to strict safeguarding protocols. We maintain a DBS register for our staff, which allowed the team to work safely during school hours. However, to minimise disruption to students and staff, the majority of the work was scheduled during school holidays.
The project was completed successfully, on time and within budget, with minimal impact on the school’s day-to-day operations. The result is a safer, more accessible, and functional environment for students and staff alike.
