MS Oakes was commissioned to build an innovative eco home, Creek Cabin, following Passivhaus principles, within the scenic Suffolk Broads – a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Creek Cabin began as an exploration of the possibility to create a sustainable, low-impact home for the future, while preserving the local flora and fauna. Constructed primarily from natural materials, the design incorporates living elements that enhance the connection between the building and the surrounding ecology. The project involved extensive joinery, woodwork, and brickwork, with materials salvaged from the existing structure thoughtfully reused in the new build, demonstrating our commitment to both sustainability and historical preservation.

Set within a RAMSAR-designated wetland and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the project required meticulous planning to navigate stringent landscape and ecological constraints. Access to the site was challenging, and the location, within a flood-risk zone, necessitated a flood-resilient construction approach to ensure long-term durability.
This project highlights our expertise in managing complex environmental and logistical challenges, protecting the local ecosystem, and delivering exceptional craftsmanship that harmonises with its natural surroundings.
“We just love our beautiful low-energy house. MS Oakes were committed to the complexity of the design and high level of detail, with skilled workmanship and high quality. From management to craftsmen on site, everyone was dedicated and friendly.”
