Tuttles Department Store, Lowestoft

Quality of Place Awards 2024: Highly commended

In partnership with Historic England, East Suffolk Council, Lowestoft Town Council, East Suffolk Building Preservation Trust and Lowestoft Vision are working together to revitalise the town through the North Lowestoft Heritage Action Zone and the London Road, Lowestoft High Street Heritage Action Zone.

As part of this initiative, MS Oakes was commissioned to restore the original façade of the former Tuttles department store.

The restoration aimed to preserve the original character of the building while addressing structural challenges. To avoid the need for a full reconstruction of the elevation, we implemented innovative structural solutions. Complex scaffolding arrangements were necessary, along with repairs to the brickwork, timber replacement, and window refurbishments. These works were carried out in a heritage zone and public area, which presented accessibility challenges. To mitigate these issues and protect the public, bespoke printed debris netting was used, which not only prevented dust but also provided information about the project.

This project was shortlisted for the Quality of Place Awards, which celebrate excellence in building design, conservation, and landscaping. The restoration of Tuttles department store was Highly Commended for its careful execution, ensuring the preservation of an important piece of the town’s heritage.
