Improvement Works to Jubilee Parade, Lowestoft – Phase 2

As part of an ambitious plan to enhance Lowestoft and boost its profile as a key visitor destination, MS Oakes was contracted to construct 72 distinctive new beach huts, known as Eastern Edge, on the site of the former Jubilee Terrace huts along Lowestoft’s seafront.

The scope of works included the creation of gabion screening and the fabrication and installation of a galvanized steel cantilevered deck. During the process, it was discovered that the rear wall of the steel structure was in poor condition, requiring innovative solutions for secure structural connections. Instead of using a bolted plate as originally planned, we had to break out parts of the wall and securely install plates to make these structural connections.

A non-slip composite deck board, featuring integrated floor lighting, was then laid. The 72 timber beach huts were delivered flat pack to site and constructed over two tiers (with the lower tier designed for accessibility). Access stairs with metal balustrades and handrails were installed to ensure safe and easy access.

As with Phase 1, public access was maintained throughout the project, making safety a top priority. To minimize disruption, the works were scheduled for the quieter winter months. To ensure the safe transportation of materials, all vehicles were escorted along the promenade on foot. We also coordinated closely with the contractor responsible for delivering the flat-pack beach huts, which were carefully lowered into place by crane for assembly.

The project was completed successfully, to the satisfaction of East Suffolk Council.

“I am delighted to see these bold new beach huts officially open and available for use, just in time for the summer season.”
