MS Oakes Ltd was engaged by Waveney District Council to carry out essential repairs and restoration work on the roof and façade of the historic Marina Theatre, located on Lowestoft Seafront. Originally built as a skating rink in Victorian times, the Marina Theatre was converted into a theatre in 1878, hosting productions by the Bolshoi Ballet, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Royal Opera House, before being converted into a cinema in 1930.
The scope of works was extensive. We replaced the wide lead gutter along the front façade and replaced the rainwater goods. Repairs to and re-rendering of the façade were carried out and a new canopy, fascia, and signage were added. A safety handrail was installed along the top parapet wall, minor repairs were made to to the slate roofing, and the flat roofing was replaced.
During the project, the theatre remained open to the public, so public safety was a top priority. Work also had to be scheduled carefully to avoid noisy activities during peak times, ensuring minimal disruption to the public. The site manager worked closely with the theatre manager to coordinate these efforts and ensure safety and smooth operations throughout the course of the project which was successfully completed within 18 weeks.
